Gapen is a heritage American tackle brand that began in 1936, when Don Gapen tied the Original Muddler Fly on the Nipigon River in Ontario. That pattern became one of the most copied flies in the world. Don’s son, Dan Gapen Sr., carried the company forward and added the lures river anglers still know: the snag-resistant Ugly Bug jig, the original Bait-Walker sinker, wood surface baits such as the Walk-N-Lizard, plus Gapen floats, sensitive Wilderness rods, and Dan’s fishing books. Today Gapen is independently owned and operated from 301 4th St., State Center, Iowa 50247, together with Tactical Tackle Systems (TTS Lures).
