Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Papa Jig?
The Papa Jig is TTS’s compact, 3D-printed panfish jig for crappie, bluegill, perch, and other sunfish. Sold as a 2-pack and a larger Papa Jig Pack. Companion pieces include small Ugly Bugs (1/32–1/16 oz) and Freshwater Shrimp-style micro jigs. Assorted colors are the default; request specifics in the order notes.
What size should I use?
- 1/64–1/32 oz calm ponds, clear water, cold fronts, tiny mouths.
- 1/32 oz — best all-around starting size.
- 1/16 oz — wind, deeper brush, current, or suspended crappie.
Taps but no hookups? The bait is too big or the stroke is too long.
How do I fish it?
Slip float: Hang the jig just above brush, dock shade, or a bed. Twitch the rod tip 12 inches. The bite is often a lean or slide, not a slam. Pair with a Gapen panfish or crappie float.
Slow swim: Count down to marked fish, reel just fast enough to stay above cover, pause every few turns.
Vertical / ice: Lift 2–4 inches and hold. Glow or high-contrast colors help in stained water and late light.
What colors first?
- Clear: pearl, white, smoke, pink, natural insect.
- Stain / overcast: chartreuse, pink/white, orange, black/chartreuse.
- Beds: a color you can see — white, chartreuse, or a dark trackable jig.
- Ice / low light: glow, pink, chartreuse.
What rod and line?
Ultralight or light spinning, 5'6"–7', 2–6 lb mono or 4–6 lb fluoro. Mono is friendlier under a bobber; fluoro for a straight retrieve in clear water.
Do I tip with live bait?
On tough days, yes — a tiny piece of worm, a spike, or a wax worm on 1/32 oz for gills; a small minnow under a slip float for crappie. Do not bury the hook in a huge chunk of crawler.
Is this good for kids?
This is the best of the three kits for kids and dock fishing. Tie it on, set a float 18–30 inches up, watch the bobber. Add the TTS hook remover so nobody digs with pliers.
Can I ice fish with these?
Yes. 1/32 and 1/16 oz in glow and high-contrast colors, 2–4 lb line, short lift and a long pause.
How fast do kits ship?
TTS ships from Iowa. Orders on gapen.com ship from Iowa. Free shipping over $199 (see current cart for live rates). Made-to-order color packs can add 2–5 production days. Confirm stock at 1.877.623.2099.
Can I request colors?
Yes on many TTS packs. Put colors in the order notes or email [email protected]. No note = a working assorted mix.
Bass vs. Walleye vs. Panfish vs. Variety Kit?
Species kits keep you from paying for baits you will not throw. The Variety Kit is the one-box option for a lake that holds all three expert-selected pieces, usually at a bundle price.
