Frequently Asked Questions

What is in the Walleye Kit?

A working mix of the presentations that put walleye in the box: stand-up / anti-snag jigs in the Ugly Bug family, compact soft profiles such as the T-Leech and freshwater-shrimp / twist-style bodies, and multiple weights so you can fish skinny water or 20-plus feet. Colors are a working light-and-dark assortment. Lock a color list for a charter by emailing us before you order.

What size jig should I throw?

  • 1/16–1/8 oz — shallow, cold, slack current, or finicky fish.
  • 1/8–1/4 oz — everyday lake and moderate-river size. Start here.
  • 3/8–5/8 oz — wind, deep rock, tailraces, vertical jigging.

If the jig is not ticking bottom, it is too light.

How do I fish it in a lake vs. a river?

Lakes: Pitch across a rock point, reef, or wind-blown island edge. Lift 612 inches and follow it down on semi-slack line — most walleye eat on the drop. On windy mid-summer days, fish the windward side of islands in about 5–8 feet where bait gets pinned.

Rivers: Cast upstream or up-and-across. Stay in contact. Hop or crawl so the stand-up head walks the rock. Target eddy seams and the first break off a tailout. Tip a minnow in spring and fall; a leech or half-crawler when the water is warm.

What colors do walleye want?

  • Spring / stain / low light: chartreuse, orange, gold, firetiger, glow.
  • Clear / sun: white, silver, shiner, smoke, green pumpkin leech.
  • Night or after a blow: black or purple, or a dark jig / bright trailer.

Tie one bright and one natural. Let the fish vote in the first 20 minutes.

What rod and line?

6'3"–7' medium-light or medium fast spinning. 6–8 lb fluoro in clear lakes; 8–10 lb in rocky rivers; braid-to-fluoro for deep vertical work. A Gapen slip float helps when fish are off the bottom.

Do I need live bait?

Not when fish are active. Tip a fathead, leech, or crawler after a cold front or on a pressured lake. Hook a minnow through the mouth and out the top of the head so a stand-up jig keeps it swimming level.

Why does the jig stand up?

A round head lies on its side and hides the hook. The Ugly Bug wedge (1969) rests at about 45° — hook up, profile visible — and walks rock instead of rolling into a crack.

Will it catch sauger, smallmouth, and pike?

Yes. Sauger eat the same jig a size smaller and deeper. River smallmouth eat 1/8 oz in brown, craw, and orange. Pike will grab 1/4–3/8 oz; add a short bite leader if they are thick.

How fast do kits ship?

TTS ships from Iowa. Orders on gapen.com ship from Iowa. Free shipping over $199 (see current cart for live rates). Made-to-order color packs can add 2–5 production days. Confirm stock at 1.877.623.2099.

Can I request colors?

Yes on many TTS packs. Put colors in the order notes or email [email protected]. No note = a working assorted mix.

Bass vs. Walleye vs. Panfish vs. Variety Kit?

Species kits keep you from paying for baits you will not throw. The Variety Kit is the one-box option for a lake that holds all three — expert-selected pieces, usually at a bundle price.
