History of the Weedcutter
Gapen created the first willow-leaf spinnerbait in the early 1970s and named it the Weedcutter. At the time, most spinnerbaits used round Colorado-style blades that created heavy pulsating pull and tangled easily in weeds. By switching to a longer, slimmer willow-leaf blade, Gapen produced a lure that retrieved more easily through vegetation while still generating attractive flash and vibration.
The design quickly proved effective for northern pike and muskie in weedy lakes and rivers. More than five decades later, the Weedcutter remains a proven big-fish lure, with anglers continuing to report trophy pike and muskies caught on this original Gapen pattern.
Fishing Tips: Retrieve the Weedcutter through weed beds, along edges, and over submerged vegetation. The willow-leaf blade allows a smoother retrieve with less pull than traditional Colorado blades while still creating flash and vibration. Effective for northern pike and muskie in heavy cover. Vary retrieve speed and experiment with pauses near openings or points. A proven big-fish producer in both lakes and rivers.
