Frequently Asked Questions
What is in the TTS Bass Kit?
The Bass Kit is a hand-curated finesse assortment built around the TTS soft-plastic and jig lineup — profiles such as the T-Leech / Ned-style leech, T-Grub, Flat T-Worm, and Rocket Squid, plus complementary jig or rig pieces depending on the current pack-out. It is meant to cover docks, grass edges, rock, and wood without five separate bags. Exact color mix can vary by season. Need a specific colorway? Email [email protected] or call 1.877.623.2099.
Is this kit for largemouth, smallmouth, or both?
Both. Largemouth eat these profiles around docks, pads, and laydowns. Smallmouth — especially river and rocky-lake fish — eat the compact profiles on a stand-up or Ned-style presentation. Use lighter pieces in clear water; step up profile or weight in stain and heavy cover.
What rod, reel, and line should I use?
A 6'6"–7'3" medium-light or medium spinning rod with a 1000–2500 reel. Spool 6–10 lb fluorocarbon for clear lakes, or 10–15 lb braid with an 8–12 lb fluoro leader around grass and wood. A Gapen Wilderness spinning rod is the intended feel: enough tip to feel the tick, enough backbone to turn a fish off a piling.
How do I fish the baits?
- Ned / T-Leech: 1/16–1/10 oz head. Drag 6–12 inches, pause 2–4 seconds. Most bites come on the pause.
- Grub: Slow-roll just above grass, rod tip low so the tail swims.
- Creature / Rocket Squid: Texas or Tokyo-style punch around pads and docks. Pitch, fall on slack, two short hops.
- Ugly Bug: Cast up-current, let the wedge head stand at ~45°, and crawl. It was built to walk rock.
If you are not getting bit, slow down before you change colors.
What colors work best for bass?
- Clear / sun: green pumpkin, watermelon, smoke, natural craw.
- Stained: chartreuse, black/blue, junebug, orange craw.
- Low light: black, black/blue.
- Season rule from Dan Gapen Sr.: light colors in spring and fall, dark in mid-summer.
Will these snag in rock and wood?
Light Texas or Ned rigs come through cover well. The Ugly Bug wedge sheds a high percentage of hang-ups versus a round head. If you wedge in a crevice, do not horse it point the rod at the snag, give slack, then a short pop from a new angle.
Is the Bass Kit good for beginners and gifts?
Yes. It skips the $80 tackle-aisle guess. Include a note: start with the smallest profile on a light head and drag it slowly along the first weed edge.
Are these made in the USA?
TTS baits are designed and manufactured in Iowa as part of the Gapen & Tactical Tackle Systems family. Gapen hardware traces to Don Gapens 1936 Muddler and Dan Gapen Sr.’s Ugly Bug (1969) and Bait-Walker.
How fast do kits ship?
TTS ships from Iowa. Orders on gapen.com ship from Iowa. Free shipping over $199 (see current cart for live rates). Made-to-order color packs can add 2–5 production days. Confirm stock at 1.877.623.2099.
Can I request colors?
Yes on many TTS packs. Put colors in the order notes or email [email protected]. No note = a working assorted mix.
Bass vs. Walleye vs. Panfish vs. Variety Kit?
Species kits keep you from paying for baits you will not throw. The Variety Kit is the one-box option for a lake that holds all three — expert-selected pieces, usually at a bundle price.
